I moved through this brash cancer drama intermittently laughing out loud with tears and snot flying out of my face, never fully comprehending why I cared so deeply for a character with whom I have virtually nothing in common--nothing, that is, except the everything of my body, my fear of death, and my stubborn tenacity. As Marisa faces her own vulnerability/mortality, her heroic fortitude glitters bright purple with dignity and humor. No subject is taboo; she is wholly herself with no pretension or inhibition. She continues to work and have a meaningful relationship while battling cancer. She shows up late to her own chemotherapy sessions in designer shoes! She even manages to contextualize her own tragedy by recalling her experience as a reporter during 9/11, a strip I found extremely moving and demonstrative of Marisa's emotional largesse. This book is a must-read for anyone recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Not only is it a testimony of unflinching courage, but it also raises basic and important questions about finding the right doctor, treatment options, insurance logistics, pain management, and all of the physical and emotional details involved with fighting cancer.
