Book Reviews of Captain's Fury (Codex Alera, Book 4)Book Review: Great! Summary: 5 StarsThis is Butcher's best work yet. It did not last long enough. I even went back and reread the third one after I read this. I just hope that this story line doesn't end like the Wheel of Time.
Book Review: This series (and book) tops my list Summary: 5 StarsDoes this book need another review? Probably not. But, I want to be sure Butcher is encouraged to continue the saga. If I wasn't already so near the end of my string I would pray for time to fly by so that I could get to the next book in this series. Butcher always has the right mix of character development, action, intrigue, humor, etc. I like this series even more than Dresden.
Book Review: Best I've read yet! Summary: 5 StarsExcellently written! As good as or maybe even better than the Dresden Files. Unique and interesting, a must read to anyone who enjoys a thrill. Hope there is more than one book after this one!
Book Review: Will the real Jim Butcher please stand up? Summary: 5 StarsI've read both the Dresden Files and the Codex series' and I cant believe they are both written by the same author. While I like the Dresden Files, and eagerly await the next installment in a couple of months, the Codex series is simply excellent. Each book flows smoothly, fleshing out characters, the world around them and the magic that surrounds them.
I could feel the pain of growing up an outcast in the earlier books, and eagerly await the next to see if he ends up becoming as powerful as his newly discovered grandfather.
Book Review: Lots of enjoyable action, but some of it in slow motion Summary: 4 Stars(No spoilers.)
I've really enjoyed Butcher's series in this world. He tantalizes us with the intimation that this is somehow an alternate history which took a side trip from Roman history... with alien (to us) races, plus "furies" that offer magical abilities using air, water, earth and fire.
Captain's Fury is well into the story, and if you're reading this you undoubtedly have read the earlier novels. I can assure you: this one is better than the last one, and it makes me feel as though the next will exceed what we see here. Things do actively _happen_; people take risks, go into danger, make choices, fall in love.
Somehow, though, the pace isn't very fast. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, the story is told from multiple viewpoints, and (sometimes I liked this, sometimes I didn't) Butcher invests a lot of time (and pages) in giving blow-by-blow descriptions of battle scenes.
And I do love the guy's writing. It isn't as wonderfully sardonic as some of his other work, but hey, that's okay. It's still a fun read.
