Book Reviews of Captain's Fury (Codex Alera, Book 4)

Book Review: Captain's Fury
Summary: 5 Stars

Book 4 was the best book in the series so far! This series should be a requirement for fans of Fantasy.

Book Review: Enjoyable Fantasy with Military Backgrounding
Summary: 4 Stars

Jim Butcher is an all-round great author, and while I don't enjoy his Codex Alera series as much as the Dresden Files, I still like it.

In book four, Tavi (now a legion Captain) is coming into his own. Until faced with a double bind by the corrupt political senate. Butcher shows Tavi's evolution and heritage in a believable, real fashion. His enemies are more than ready to trap him within the rules and command structure of military war.

Of the Codex Alera novels, this one had the greatest military intrigue and political maneuvering. Echoes of the Roman Empire in terms of politica, but lots of daring covert missions and action to break up the intrigue. Now twenty years old, Tavi has matured and is living up to his responsibilities. Included the unstated ones... let's say we find out more about Tavi's heritage and leave it at that.

Backdrop is continued war with the Canim, and a rebellion in a far province/neighbor of the empire. We finally get to see Gaius Sextus do more than sit on the sidelines.

Overall, I enjoyed the novel, and recommended it for readers of fantasy. Read the first three of Codex Alera first, though.

Book Review: Captain's Fury
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is great! Follows the other three fantastically! I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys science fiction.

Book Review: More Brilliance from Butcher...
Summary: 5 Stars

Jim Butcher is a master of his craft, Captain's Fury is yet another example of his amazing writing talent. The fourth in the Codex Alera - this book sees Tavi continue to grow into an amazing man, despite the odds always being against him. Like the Dresden Files, this series has me often laughing out loud, sitting on the edge of my seat, and unable to put it down. An amazing read, Can't wait for book 5.

Book Review: Delightful and intricate
Summary: 5 Stars

Captain's Fury is a "military science fiction"--a term that's usually a turn-off for me. But this book has such well-developed characters, and such a wonderfully crafted, intricate plot, that I was not put off by the violence. In fact, the vivid descriptions of Roman-era warcraft are essential to the book.

The introspection and self-doubts of the intelligent and powerful characters makes them real. The plotting is simple delightful; when the lead character makes a startling self-revelation due to a bureaucratic requirement, you will want to cheer. The villians are somewhat one sided--but I didn't like them anyway. (Very clever, Mr. Butcher!)

I am surprised that I cannot get into Jim Butcher's other series! The Codex Alera is so well-written, and so enjoyable to read, I will have to give it another chance.
