Book Reviews of Captain's Fury (Codex Alera, Book 4)Book Review: Very Good Book Summary: 4 StarsI have to admit that this is the first book in the series that I didn't read from beginning to end in one sitting. It was a very good book but I found it rather anti-climactic. It felt like it took forever to get to resolutions and when we got to them they were over in mere paragraphs. However, just like most series there has to be a dull book with key information to set up the rest of the storyline. I'm still going to be waiting unpatiently for the next book, it really is that good of a story.
Book Review: Getting better and better Summary: 5 StarsJim Butcher has done it again. The fourth book in the Codex Alera series is a great read and draws you in from the start. From watching Tavi grow up to a man to the twists and turns to the secrets and turn arounds this book is an excellent edition to the series. The only problem is the wait for the next book. But it will be well worth the wait.
Book Review: Another great thriller Summary: 5 StarsOriginally, I was a fan of Butcher's Dresden books, but once I had devoured all of them I was left with a desire for more. Fortunately, I was able to pick up the Codex Alera which is just as satisfying, only in different ways.
Alera is a country reminiscent of the Roman Empire where every human being can control and commune with one or more elements of nature called furies. All except for the protagonist Tavi. The series focuses on how his "deformity" makes him unique and shapes him into an extremely strong and formidable person despite his lack of furies.
In this book of the Alera series, Tavi finds himself battling not only the deadly wolf-like Canim, but also his own people in an attempt to bring peace and save lives. Alongside this is the excursion of Amara with the First Lord to end the battle with the megalomanic High Lord Kalarus. Espionage, battles, mysteries, and political intrigues interweave to satisfy any reader, from a history military buff to a Tolkien fanatic.
The structure of this story is similar to the previous installments. The beginning is more introduction and plot expansion, lacking hard action sequences and hard gripping storytelling. But as the writing progresses, the plot expands and instances of causality set the adventure off. And though the stereotypical fantasy element of "the underdog discovering his potential to save the world" is present, the gift of the Codex Alera is that it has been three books in the making. Everything from the previous books is slowly coming together, every event, choice, or action has served an ultimate purpose. This book represents a thoroughly developed plot of deep intrigue. With each chapter the intrigue and character development expands and the tension builds to create another complex, thrilling, and passionate ride worthy of Butcher's name.
Book Review: Another fine installment... Summary: 4 StarsThis fourth volume of the Codex Alera series picked up the pace a bit and kept the story interesting. The book was as enjoyable a read the the previous books in the series, so I'll be ordering the next as soon as it appears for pre-order! The books aren't heavy reading, but they're a lot of fun anyway: interesting characters and setting, and plenty of action and plot.
Book Review: very pleased Summary: 4 Starshave been waiting for a while for book to come out and your service was excellent and I received it in great time for xmas
