Book Review: "Daddy, i want to do Something Fun"
Summary: 5 Stars
Before when I used to suggest that my seven year old son read a book, he immediately would tell me that he would rather do something "fun". I would try and explain to him just how fun reading could be, but he just wasn't buying it. Even with a shelf full of books and a healthy appetite for comedic stories, my son just did not consider reading to be something "fun".
Flash forward to the day his grandmother found a book at a yard-sale by Dav Pilkey called "Dogzilla". That evening, I heard tremendous eruptions of laughter in the living room and had to peak in to see what the fuss was about... Grandma was reading the new book to my son and he was laughing his little head off. Immediately I decided to investigate further.
You see, at this particular juncture in my son's school career, he was doing extremely well in math, but had a bit of trouble with his reading. His teacher found it difficult to get him to finish reading books in class, and we found it quite difficult to even get him interested in reading on his own at home. All of the reading that he did was assisted. Never once did I see him pick up a book unprompted.
But then I ordered a few more Dav Pilkey books.... Now I am constantly seeing my son running around the house with books in his hands. I don't have to try and convince him that books are fun, because he carries them around with him as if they were a toy spaceship. As a matter of fact I haven't seen him carrying a toy in quite some time, but the books are ever present. He has even memorized portions of the dialogue from several of the Captain Underpants books, and i can often hear him reciting them in car on the way home from karate.
Needless to say, he has been doing better reading at school with some of the "not so fun" books and his vocabulary seems to be increasing. Reading is now something fun and his poor father has one less thing that he has to try and convince his son is good. Now if only Pilkey could make some spinach or broccoli or something so that I could get him to like his vegetables. oh well, this will have to do for now.
