This gem of a book portrays the raw, uncompromising face of World War 2 in short but cutting stories of the fighting men - the courageous, the cowardly, the compassionate and the cruel - and the women - the innocent and the wanton - caught up in it.
Carl Foreman brought it magnificently to the screen in 1963. For more realism he wisely decided to shoot it in black and white. So many, many of the images from it have etched themselves in my memory now for over four and a half decades consequently totally paling the acclaimed masters that followed it ie. Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, Platoon.
