Book Review: This is what we all wanted our teenage years to be like!

One year has passed since Betsy, Tacy and their crowd graduated from high school and two years since their friend Carney did so and left for Vassar college for young women, out East. Summer vacation has arrived and Carney has decided to invite her somewhat reserved, Eastern room-mate Isobel, to stay with her for some weeks. She is hesitant to whether Isobel will really fit in to the Middle West style of life, her family and friends but when Betsy Ray joins the house party by surprise, herself having moved to Minneapolis with her family since we last heard of her, nothing can fail or be dull. Carney's best friend Bonnie, that left for Paris four years earlier, also comes to stay and there is no end to all the picnics, parties and fun that the girls get up to. Four years earlier, Carney's "boyfriend" Larry, also left Midvalley, and for these four years he and she have corresponded weekly and been faithful to each other, assuming that they one day will be a couple. But a new man, Sam, has arrived in town with his family and while he is completely everything Carney can not stand and totally different from Larry, he still makes an impression on her and us readers soon realise that he is in love with Carney and she with him, not knowing it herself. For her, Larry is the only possible one, till he one day stands on her doorstep and they both realise that they have grown apart despite their correspondence. To all us hopeless romantics, this is the book to read. It has all the charm of the Betsy-Tacy books and more. I could not put the book down after starting it and when I had finished it, I floated on a happy cloud. Nothing can be so cosy and wholesome as these books! No dirt, no foul language, no sex, just happy reading. This is the way we all wanted our teen-age years to be like and what we wish for our children. A must read, especially if one feels that the gap of three years between "Betsy and Joe" and "Betsy and the Great World" is too big.
