Book Reviews of Carrie

Book Review: First Book
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an absolutely brilliant first book by Stethen King. The reactions of Carrie White to the torment and prejudicies that she suffers at school are spot on; and are dreams all of us share about the people we hate.
Stephen King uses what we wished we could do to the people we hate effectively and the reader will enjoy the revenge that Carrie takes.

Book Review: The book that started it all
Summary: 5 Stars

The book that launched Mr King onto an unsuspecting public and what a story it is - its no wonder that he went onto mega stardom.
You are immediately gripped by the story of this misunderstood naive girl. King cleverly intertwines 'as it happens' narrative with quotes from newspapers, books and psycology reports all referring to the 'Carrie White Incident'. It is with this style that you know that something big is going to happen and it is this that gives the story it's page turning quality.
To put it simply, breathtaking...

Book Review: First and best?
Summary: 5 Stars

Thirty years on, Stephen King's debut novel still reads like a dream. Shorn of the bloated page counts that would become the norm for his later work, the plot of Carrie moves at a lightning pace, and even after several reads the sheer momentum of events make this a novel hard to put down.

What makes Carrie timeless is the theme of bullying, and Carrie herself - the perpetual underdog - has the reader's sympathy throughout. Casting the character who would normally be the villain as the heroine (for want of a better word) is a masterstroke; the reader wants Carrie to succeed, but her doom is inescapable.

Stephen King has written a number of good books, but for emotional engagement and storytelling punch it's still difficult to find anything to top his debut. Essential.

Book Review: His First Novel - Definitely Worth A Read
Summary: 4 Stars

Having seen the film and read many of King's other books, the time was right to read Carrie, his first published novel.

Carrie is a teenager who leads a sheltered life and is brought up by her insanely religious mother. Carrie is humiliated and bullied at school. When it looks like Carrie is just about to be eventually accepted at school she faces her worst humiliation......and seeks revenge.

I would agree with Stephen King's feeling that this book is "raw" but it is still highly enjoyable and original. I enjoyed the way that the story was told partly in the first person and then partly by newspaper stories and other such excerpts from materials published after the events that unfold.

Not King's best work but very much worth reading and better than some of his more recent work. 7/10.

Book Review: Good but weird...
Summary: 3 Stars

This book was good and kept me entertained for three days but I found it very weird and graphic like when he wrote about menstruation (did it really need to be that graphic?) I wouldn't recommend this book for people below the age of 16 due to the language, graphic and gory details and some of the events which unfold in the book. I noticed that it was quite similar to The Exorcist though not as scary. Overall it is quite a good read however not as good as I thought it would've been, some parts (especially towards the end when the prom trick occurs) are predictable however Stephen King does have a very good imagination and is good with descriptions, I particularly enjoyed the part where he described the events which happened in the town after Carrie got a nasty trick played on her at the prom, this was probably the best part of the book as he actually made you feel as if you were there witnessing it all. Certain parts of the book were a little difficult to grasp like all those witness statements and extracts from other books and near the end when Carrie was dying, it left me wondering what had actually killed her. The ending is very good and creepy and leaves you wondering whether there will be a sequel.
