Book Review: A BATTLE FOR SURVIVAL
Summary: 4 Stars
A group of contestants on a Survivor type reality show find themselves battling for their very lives instead of game show prizes after a powerful tropical storm leaves them stranded. It seems the island the show is being filmed at is the home of a tribe of small cave dwelling pig-human monsters. Weaponless and cut off from the outside world the group must try to coexist and improvise if they want to survive. Keene delivers a great thriller which is a tribute to the late Richard Laymon and inspired by Laymon's Beast house four book series. Fans of Keene's overall books will spot references to the labyrinth and one of the characters even has an indirect connection to Keene's book Terminal.
THE GOOD: Great writing, some well drawn out characters,you are left wondering whether or not anyone will come out alive as the deck is clearly stacked against the stranded people.
THE BAD: The premise of being stranded on an island has been done to death in horror films and fiction.
THE UGLY: What the pig like monsters do to the women they catch and bring back to their cave lair.
