Book Review: "A page turner"-passionately captivating, lyrical, & moving!

I picked up Catfish and Mandala thinking it's just another travelogue/memoir but soon discovered how wrong I was after sampling a few pages. I ended up purchasing the book and reading Pham's memoir in one sitting.
Catfish and Mandala gives an unprecedented view of the odessey of a Vietnamese family's struggle to escape a war-torn Vietnam and the many challenges and hardships they faced in America(San Jose, CA) interpersed with the author's incredible two-wheeled travels in an effort to discover and reconcile his heart's turbulance with his family, his homeland and his identity.
Like life's intricacies, Pham's memoir covers a matrix of themes, oftentimes harsh, yet courageously honest, evoking the full gamut of feelings---eliciting tears to gut rending laughter.
Catfish and Mandala is a delightfully significant contribution to the understanding of Asian American Study/Culture from a talented new author.
Pham's voice is from the heart revealing the universal language of pain and suffering we know too well, and in sharing his life lessons we can perhaps come to understand and enrich ours.
I highly recommend Catfish and Mandala!
A side note: Andrew Pham won the 1999 Pacific Rim Award for Nonfiction.
