Book Reviews of Cheese Primer

Book Review: For Those Wallaces & Gromits Out There
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're obsessed with cheese, if you plan your weekends and vacations around cheese, if you served on FFA dairy judging teams, if you go to the cheese coolers at the grocers first, if you correct people on their pronunciation of Gouda, if you've had cheese omelettes for breakfast, cheese soup for lunch and cheese casserole for supper - all in one day, then you're a cheese person understood only by other cheese persons. This book is recommended for your private cheese library.

Book Review: Good, but getting out of date
Summary: 3 Stars

A good introduction to cheese, with details about specific European cheeses (especially French) for the more advanced cheesehead. Good general overviews of the countries, and comments about some of the strengths and short-comings of each. Unfortunately, this book is going on 12 years old so it's almost irrelevant for locating specific cheeses.
The section on the U.S. is especially out-of-date as the artisinal industry has continued to explode since publishing. Worth a buy and a browse for $10, but there must be something better out there.

Book Review: Great Cheese book
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great book - packed with more than any one person could possibly ever want to know about cheese. Jenkins e starts out the book very well, giving you basics about cheese: the different kinds, how to serve it, how to store it, which to choose and which not to choose, how each of the different groups of cheese are made, etc.

I read every page of the beginning of the book. The author is a complete cheese-freak...which is good. He knows a lot. But the one thing I wish he'd done is take into consideration us normal mortals a bit. I can't afford to pay huge amounts for cheese, and I don't live in NY near an awesome cheese shop. In fact, I don't really have a cheese shop except at the fancier grocery store in town - which does have a decent cheese counter.

I haven't finished the whole book - I'm into the more detailed part that goes into many different kinds of cheeses. I know I won't remember it all, but it is fun to read about it. And I understand how to buy and care for cheese so much better now. And I love trying different cheeses, so I will make a list of some that he's described that I want to try, and see if I can find them!

One other thing, he includes information about the historical aspects of different cheeses and where they come from, etc. and I found all that very interesting. Overall, it's a great book, and if you're a Foodie and amateur chef like me, it's really good reading.

Book Review: Great book on cheese
Summary: 5 Stars

I was sold when I saw this book displayed at my favorite cheese counter. I use this text to find wine and cheese matches, but it also has a wealth of opinionated information on cheese itself. I love cheese, and I love this book.

Book Review: Have Cheese Will Travel
Summary: 5 Stars

Although I wont be taking the trip the book was intended for for a couple of more months, I've found it to be a wonderful read, loaded with the who, what where of cheese, but much more useful information as well to help plan a trip. Mr Jenkins really knows his cheese and how to write an interesting book.
