Book Reviews of ChickenhawkBook Review: Down and Dirty Summary: 5 Stars
I have read 30+ vietnam era memoirs but if your looking for how it was as a Huey piot in the war. This book is the one for you. Mason does an excellent job depicting events. A masterpiece, a must read.
Book Review: Excellent ! Summary: 5 Stars
As the cover says, "The best book to come out of Vietnam". This is a hard hitting book which is very well described. Approx. 50 pages in, you are already riding in the chopper with 'Bob' Mason. A sorry tale but a very true one.
Book Review: Good reading for the 4th of July Summary: 5 Stars
I finished reading Chickenhawk last night just a few minutes after midnight, July 4, 2008. I feel like I oughta apologize to its author, Bob Mason, for taking 25 years to "discover" his excellent account of one man's horrific wartime experiences in Vietnam over 40 years ago. Sam Hynes, author of the equally excellent WWII pilot's memoir, Flights of Passage, once told me that one of the most important ingredients in a memoir is that the narrator be likeable. Chickenhawk has that most vital element, for Bob Mason is as likeable a guy as you'll find in the literature of war, and his prose is absolutely real and riveting as he tells of his whirling descent into the madness that was Vietnam. His final chapter summarizes the kind of confusing nightmare his life became upon his return home, as he struggled to understand and survive this thing now commonly known as PTSD. I like this guy. In fact I like him well enough that I will try to find a copy of his out-of-print sequel to Chickenhawk. It may take a while, but I'll be back to comment on that one too. In the meantime, I urge anyone who enjoys good writing of any kind to read this book. It's the real deal. - Tim Bazzett, author of SoldierBoy: At Play in the ASA (RatholeBooks.com)
Book Review: Great Courage Summary: 5 Stars
Great Courage
Since the beginning of the book you can tell the story is so good you cannot stop Reading it. It describes vividly what the life at the front line was for a helicopter pilot for dangerous missions.
The description of what life was back then is amazing, it shows the reality soldiers lived in Vietnam, how many people faced death everyday and the courage of pilots to do what had to do to accomplish missions.
I feel sorry for him at the end of the book, I believe he deserve better, a good life for somebody that was a hero.
Book Review: Gritty and Real Summary: 4 Stars
Mason's journey of personal experiences as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam war in "Chickenhawk" make excellent and real reading that drops you right in the thick of each situation. You can almost smell the environment he is in.
Mason also writes with an easy and almost relaxed style, which makes for a very smooth read. Combined with some technical information, though not too much, Mason has struck a great balance in his book.
Anyone who is interested in the personal experiences of personnel in Vietnam would enjoy this book immensely and get a lot from it. It is a great book and a great story.
