Book Reviews of Chill of FearBook Review: I'm a huge Kay Hooper fan, but..... (spoilers!) Summary: 3 Stars
I've been anxiously awaiting this latest book in the SCU series but I must admit to being a little disappointed. I love the psychic element of these books and could even deal with the ghosts wandering around (the surprise about the little girl and her dog was quite good), but when the murderer turns out to be someone who has been dead for a hundred years, that was too much for me. Please keep writing these SCU books, but I'd prefer them to be a bit more believable. And I'd love to see some of the characters we've already gotten to know....like some more cases solved by Bishop, Miranda or Galen. It appears once you're married off in this series, you can't play an active role anymore.
I really do love Kay Hooper's books, love her characters and love the concept, and I did enjoy this book which is why I gave it three stars, but it wasn't my favorite.
Book Review: Kay Hooper gets it right Summary: 5 Stars
See the mainstream reviewers for plot synopsis. Kay spent a lot less time on explaining how the psychics do what they do--"It's all physics" anyway. As a result, the book read more smoothly, the plot unfolded better. She had space for character development. This is the best of the series thus far. Keep it up, Hooper.
Book Review: Kay Hooper is Back! Summary: 5 Stars
I loved Kay Hooper's earlier books but some the latest weren't up to the same standard. I'd say Chill of Fear is one of her best. Really excellent and gripping - a terrific read!
Book Review: Lame genre fiction Summary: 2 Stars
Unlike some reviewers here, I haven't read the other (apparently better) books in this series. The larger premise--a special wing of the FBI staffed by psychics--completely hooked me, but this novel quickly devolved into standard genre schlock with all its weaknesses: "Characters" who interchangeably spout exposition, contrived romance, and so on.
Here's hoping other books in the series are more satisfying.
Book Review: More mystery and paranormal than romance! Summary: 5 Stars
I don't know why some reviewers did not like this book in the SCU/Bishop series. I really loved it. Lots of thrills and chills!! The story begins 25 years ago in Leisure, Tennessee at The Lodge where a young girl is hiding in a closet and hears something evil coming but can't tell if it is inside her or outside the door. From the light coming in under the door, she sees two feet and basically that is all we know from that past. Advance 20 years, FBI agent Quentin Hayes in on vacation and in the police station conference room in Leisure. He is working as he has for the past ten years to try and solve a very cold case of 20 years ago when he was 12 that a young girl (Missy) was found murdered. Noah Bishop has just formed his Special Crimes Unit nicknames the Spooky Crimes Unit and has come to try to persuade Quentin to join. Quentin is a "seer."
While there the police ask their help as an eight year old girl has gone missing at The Lodge. With Bishop's "spider sense", they are able to recover the girl but also sense there a lurking dark evil.
Now come forward to the present and Quentin is back, this time staying at the Lodge at Bishop's suggestion, to do more research. He meets Diana Brisco and senses psychic ability especially when they shake hands. Diana is very troubled as since she was eight and was "hearing voices" and having blackouts, her father has had her in various hospitals and with various doctors in therapy and on many, many drugs. She finally went off all drugs and is now at The Lodge with a therapeutic artists' workshop. Quentin has his work cut out for him trying to convince Diana that she is not insane but a medium after she sees and speaks with Missy, the young girl he knew 25 years ago that was murdered.
Ms. Hooper is great as always in showing evil and its insidious ways and good triumphing after a very long and hard road.
