Book Reviews of Chord Chemistry

Book Review: A must have for the serious guitarist
Summary: 5 Stars

Ted Greene is one of those who stand out from the crowd as very unique in his approach to the guitar. He opens your mind to new perspectives on building and executing chords which you would not have likely found on your own. This is an excellent resource for any guitarist intermediate through advanced.

Book Review: A real wealth of information
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great book for any guitar player who wants to go beyond the standard chord catalog and delve into the more advanced area of harmony and how chords fit together. There are a lot of useful hints and tips in here, primarily for jazz players, but any player can benefit from what Ted has to say. He explains some of the more confusing topics of music (e.g. chord substitution and reharmonizing chord progressions) in a clear and concise manner. It takes some time to get used to the chord diagrams, which were done by hand, and much of this book appears to have been typed on a manual typewriter, complete with Ted's handwritten notes. I would hope that eventually the publisher would consider typesetting it and producing the chord diagrams in some other fashion--but then, it would probably lose a lot of its charm; it'd be like removing the pictures of barefoot hippie Ted playing in the garden surrounded by his guitars. This book will require a certain amount of experience with the guitar, and a lot of patience, but it's the perfect book for someone who has graduated from "Here's a C, here's a G, here's an F#m7" and is ready for a challenge.

Book Review: Awesome Book
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow, this book has chords I never knew existed, and impossible to play. but I believe you can never have too many chord books, and this one was a welcome addition to my collection. Definitely a good reference book, maybe I'll get around to thoroughly studying it one day, but it's a keeper

Book Review: Beginners Bible for sure, good for more advanced players too
Summary: 5 Stars

If you know someone who has started to play the guitar get them this book. Doubly if they have any interest in jazz, since that is where things head.

The first chapter of the book deals with all of the triad voicings possible, major and minor-- from power chords to very open three note chords. There is a logic to the order and that is no small claim, since there is a TON of material here. It then moves into 7th chords, with the same approach-- list every available voicing for each kind of chord. Maj7, min7, dom7, all extensions (individually and combined), diminished... you get the point. The next half of the book deals with applications-- some chord progressions, some substitution ideas, chord melody concepts, all clearly explained with lots of examples to make sure you understand.

I never got to take a lesson with Ted, but I imagine that this book is not too far off from the wealth of information he would have shared. It builds from the beginning of the book in a logical and musical way, and you can come back to it for years and years and it never gets old.

Most highly recommended.

Book Review: Best Guitar Book
Summary: 5 Stars

If you want to play well, this is it. You will learn not only chord structure, but how to build them (on the fly) and why you are doing so. Some basic music knowlage is helpfull. Warning: You have to WANT to LEARN to get the most from this book, however IT IS WORTH THE EFFORT! Ted Green's 'Modern Chord Progressions' is a nice companion. I have had an earlier copy scince the 70's and never found anything better. (Music theroy is not a bad thing )
