Book Review: Interesting departure from the norm.

Benjamin Black is the pen name of John Banville, the Irish writer and Man Booker prize winner. As Banville, his books are heavy on character and emotional exploration and sometimes light on plot and action.
'Christine Falls' is a departure in that writing as Black, Banville has tried his hand at detective fiction (of a kind). Black's central character is Quirke, an orphan with a dead wife who drinks too much (sound familiar?)and a job as a pathologist.
All this leads, too slowly, to a discovery that then takes too long to resolve. The premis of the book is a good one but I have to report the execution is too slow, too laboured and just too obvious to be considered good detective genre fiction.
Banville returns to deep character exploration and meaning and the plot is often thin and slow.
