Book Review: A novel that will change your faith forever

From the beginning of the novel, Christy Huddleston captured my imagination. She goes to a mountain village to be a schoolteacher, and wants to change the world with nothing but youthful enthusiasm. She is a strong Christian, yes, but she has no understanding of what she believes. And she arrives in a dirty, impoverished, illiterate, diesese-ridden little mountain villiage, the personification of an innocent, intelligent girl with a longing for something out of the ordinary mold. The book goes on to introduce Alice Henderson, a woman of God who is unbelievable devout. Not devout in a self-ritieous, untouched, pure way, but devout in the sense of woman who faces murder, starvation, rape, diesese, death, illiteracy and confrontation on a daily basis, and who somehow becomes stronger from the experiance. Somehow, amid death and hate, she sees a warm and loving God who only wants the best for each of his children here on earth. Yet she also believes that a person of faith must work with and for those who are in pain, and show them that God is your reason and your purpose. She constantly critiques the "ivory tower" (a place where there isn't pain, and everything is protected and unexposed to any hurt or harm) many of us live in, eloquantly speaking on behave of doing God's will to the least of his people. As Alice showed Christy what faith means in our day-to-day lives, I, with Christy, realized how much I did not trust God before.

Christy is the story of a girl who learns to stand up for herself and for her God. In some ways, it a story about growing up in faith and love. It is a love story, love between man and God, love between friends, love between parents and children, and even love between man and woman. It reconciles tragedy with love, and allows the reader to see the magnificent beauty in the world. Although Christy was written some time ago, it is as relevent now is it was then, because there is more strife than ever in the world. This novel so beautiful in its simplicity and in its truth.

Near the beginning of the novel, Christy is questioned intensely about God's purpose and God's existence. She finds that she cannot respond to the quesitons because she has not defined them for herself. With strength, fire and the ultimate love for God and for her neighbor, Christy grows into a confident young woman who now has answers to these questions. Whether you have a strong faith already or are seeking to deepen it, this ultimate story about the power of God, love and passion for the world will help you to find answers to many of the big questions of life, and will help you to define what, how and why God is.
