Chrysanthemum has one of those classic kid-lit plots: Kid is unpopular. Person with influence likes her. Everybody else is jealous and KID learns... some valuable lesson.
I'm not always impressed with these stories. I *was* the unpopular kid growing up. Too often, the lesson seems to be "You should be nice to the unpopular kid because they're really a good person" (but if they're not useful to you, you can pick on them?) or "The bullies you suck up to today will reject you tomorrow, so you should be nice to the little guy so you have friends later" (fair enough, but a bit stark, isn't it?) and... this sort of thing grates on me.
Chrysanthemum is teased because of her unusual name. And in this case she's made the envy of the class at the end because their beloved fantastic music teacher has an equally unusual long, flower name and intends to name her baby girl Chrysanthemum when she's born. (Wow!) Interestingly, Chrysanthemum does not then become best buddies with the bullies. No, she just accepts that her name is wonderful no matter what they say, good or bad, and laughs when the ringleader forgets her lines in the class play.
Okay, so the last bit isn't very sweet. But what can I say? It's realistic. I'd laugh too!
