Having been brought up in the church as well as the Christian pop culture of the last 30 years, I found the question proposed by the title of this book to be an intriguing one. Of course, the book of Hebrews tells us not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together. And as followers of Christ, that should be more than sufficient. But Philip Yancey looks for some closer-to-home (physical, earthly home, if you will) reasons for a Christian to play an active role in his or her local church. And most of the reasons he gives are not instructional but rather implied through his own personal journey: through such scenarios as church legalism; the often hilarious and unpredictable situations which emerged at his LaSalle Street Church in Chicago; and the tear-jerking stories of people in dire need who benefited from the church simply being the Church.
There are many lessons to learn in this little book. And it is an excellent source for reminding Christians that church is so much more than the obligatory Sunday morning support group. One of the illustrations which Yancey uses remarkably well is the church as a clinic to treat the hurting. This book would probably not make a good witnessing tool for the unbeliever, since its content is intended for those who are already saved. But it serves as a constant reminder of why the Lord left the Church here on earth.
