Book Reviews of Circle of Friends

Book Review: A Treasure!
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is a treasure that I plan to cherish always. It integrates 1950s Ireland, a trademark of Binchy, with a wonderful tale of heartache and learning. And, while somewhat tedious going at times, Benny Hogan, a character anyone can fall in love with, kept me reading. Kind, sensitive, and wonderfully naive, she learns the greatest lesson of anyone about love, and the meaning of it. And, through her, the reader does also. And, while learning through Benny's experiences, it is easy to get deeply involved with the characters as though they are friends. I would love to spend more time in Knockglen with Benny, Eve, Aidan, and Mother Francis.

Book Review: A good escape
Summary: 4 Stars

Frolic in another world.... in fact, many other worlds. It's classic Binchy.

Book Review: A good read, but...
Summary: 4 Stars

I admit I really enjoyed this book and I definitely like Maeve Binchy's style of writing. But I could not help noticing that it was very much like "Tara Road", another of Maeve Binchy's great books. There is the plain, but nice girl who gets a man too good to be true, the "too-good-to-be-true" guy who starts out decently but ends up cheating on the nice plain girl, and then there is the smart, beautiful blond who is a friend of the nice girl and aspires to become great. In fact, Nan bore such a likeness to Rosemary in "Tara Road" in that she comes from a humble background but uses her good looks and seemingly effortless charm to make her way in the world, that they almost seemed like one person.
I plan to continue reading Maeve Binchy books, but I hope to see a little more creativity when conjuring up characters.

Book Review: A great book about friends and coming 'into your own'!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book chronicles the friendship of Benny and Eve from the age of 10 to about 19. It focuses on their first year at university in Dublin, the friends they make, and the things that happen to them. The book tells how Benny, 'a big girl', goes from a self-deprecating, make 'em laugh at me girl to a more confident woman. And how Eve, orphaned and ignored by relatives allows herself to love and be loved. It is a good read with colorful characters that you love even if they do things they shouldn't. And the characters are real, you will be able to relate to most of them. I highly recommend it!

Book Review: A great reading experience!
