Book Reviews of Circle of FriendsBook Review: Benny is the ULTIMATE heroine! Summary: 5 Stars
This is my absolute favorite Maeve Binchy novel. I can't even discribe how much I love this book. I won't even watch the movie version because I don't want to ruin my love of the novel. (Movies NEVER come out as good) Benny is such a wonderful main character, and you just pull and root for her during the whole thing. She could be you or your bestfriend. She's such a likeable character and all the emotions and love of this book make you feel happy and content when you finish. The Irish background works so well, and allows for religion to play and important role, without seeming false. Such a good book, I love it.
Book Review: Best Book I Have Ever Read! Summary: 5 Stars
I LOVED this book!! Every time I read I get sad when the end comes because I want the story to keep going! I love the way she developed the characters, they were so life like. I feel like I personal know Benny and Eve. I would personally recommend this book to anyone!!
Book Review: Binchy Excellence Summary: 5 Stars
Once again, Maeve did it for us. This is classic quality Binchy. You won't put it down
Book Review: Binchy close to her best Summary: 5 Stars
This book comes close to the sheer perfection Binchy showed in Light a Penny Candle and Echoes. Like these, it is another 'rites of passage' novel involving friends from different social backgrounds who grow up together in a small Irish town in the 1950s, going on to university together in Dublin in the sixties. There are several friends, mainly Benny, Eve and later Nan Malone... and there is Jack; charming, handsome Jack, who runs after all three girls, including chubby and not-so-beautiful Benny. The film version tried to turn this into a Hollywood hearts-and-flowers soppy ending, but actually Binchy's ending here is more credible in the circumstances. Binchy does not always feel the need to go for the happy endings, the tidy resolutions which authors of other romance novels or rites-of-passage stories like to give us, as was shown in Echoes and Tara Road, for example. Here, the ending Binchy gives us is about the only one possible if the integrity of the characters is to be preserved. Beautiful, slow-paced, characters you feel you are relly getting to know and can identify with, this book is a delight.
Book Review: Binchy is a good storyteller Summary: 4 Stars
Despite their different backgrounds, Benny Hogan and Eve Malone are best friends while growing up in the small Irish town of Knockglen. After graduation they both go to Dublin to pursue an education. Their circle of friends grows to encompass a variety of other young people. Their friendship is strained somewhat by the presence of Nan Mahon, a beautiful and popular girl who seems to know what to do in every social situation. As the years go by, there are betrayals and shifting loyalties, but throughout this Benny and Eve continue a friendship which is enriched by the experiences that they share. Maeve Binchy can always be depended upon to weave a good story populated by interesting and loveable characters.
