Book Reviews of Cloud Atlas: A NovelBook Review: An Excellent Genre Swapping Novel Summary: 5 Stars
I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I started this book and it quickly switched from one genre to another, but after investing some time into it I really enjoyed the weaving of the various plots and the pieces that connected them all. I found it incredibly enjoyable and a fun read.
Book Review: An all-time favorite Summary: 5 Stars
"Cloud Atlas" is intensely exuberant and terrifying at the same time. The prose style riffs across genres, which might not suit everyone's tastes, but in the end this is an amazing, amusing, beautiful book. I hope Mr. Mitchell keeps writing for the rest of my life.
Book Review: An engaging read Summary: 5 Stars
This book contains six very different stories told in different styles, so different, you'd think each one was written by a different author. You come to find that each is connected to the next in some way. I really enjoyed all six of the stories, though the Timothy Cavendish story was my favorite. Reading this book is a bit like time traveling. I found it a little difficult to end one story midway and then skip on to the next, taking place in a whole different era. It added suspense though, because you know the author is going to finish each story later and if you become hooked on each of them as I did, you'll look forward to finding out what happens to each of the hapless lead characters. This book is full of good plot, good character development, good dialogue, all in a variety of styles. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading others by this author.
Book Review: An epic in bite-sized pieces Summary: 5 Stars
I picked up this novel in a bookstore in Canada, and was struck at first by the great design of the book, then by the 'concept'; six stories interweave with each other throughout history. You get the first half of each 'novella' in the first part of the book, then wrap around to their conclusions in the second half. The writing is terrific and really captures the different styles/language of the varied characters. I absolutely recommend this book as a great escapist adventure, but also with smart ideas about history flowing into the future and where that leaves us in the present.
Book Review: An exciting voyage Summary: 5 Stars
It takes a while to tweak to what is happening in Cloud Atlas, but once you are there, you will find it delightful. It is one of very few novels that give you a choice of how you read it. You will find the ideal way and pace for yourself. The themes are funny, horrifying, and haunting, and will take you on a journey as variable as a cloud passing over continents. I really cannot praise this novel highly enough.
