I really enjoyed the original "Color Me Beautiful" text which I read about 14 years ago. It was helpful when I read it and I still refer to its principles. I cannot say the same for "Color Me Younger". This is about the worst fashion/beauty self-help book I ever read. The advice is outdated and the models are "realistic" to the point of dowdiness, especially in the "after" photos. The two authors, who have no fashion sense, must be living on the moon.
Some of their advice is ignorant, much of it inane, and for the over-60 reader, downright condescending. The suggested over-60s core wardrobe, for instance, includes six casual dresses.( If you are over 40, you're only supposed to need 4, and when you're over 50, 5.) Six tee shirts are mandatory in your forties; older than that, you only need 5. Why? Why do you need 8 sweaters in your 50's, and only 6 if you are in your 40's or 60's?? Jeans? Pretty much forget them after your 40s. Let's not discuss the suggested blue eye-liner and the lipliner pencil. I won't even go there in fantasy.
If you're over 60,"abandon your spike heels."And make sure your "sensible underwear is still pretty" (presumably because some misguided male might want to have sex with you.) Just to make sure everybody understands your Granny status, "Try replacing your jacket with a beautiful knitted cardigan in your colors". After that, head for the rocking chair, where, since you "have more time" (when?) you can "read fashion magazines" and find out what younger women are wearing.
I am 62 and perfectly comfortable and happy in my silky, sexy underwear, lovely fitted jeans, and heels. I like owning more than one coat and I don't want any day-dresses. I ignorantly thought some advice on color might boost my look even more.
If you are considering buying this book, don't waste your money. If you have already bought it, throw it away. My copy is going on E-bay.
