Book Review: A Clear Eyed Account

Even this removed in time (2010) from the Columbine tragedy it's still freshly horrifying. There were so many good things about this book but the best was learning some real facts after listening for years to all the media hype. Cullen provides one of the best descriptions of Psychopathy I think I've ever read and uses it to analyze Eric Harris' reasoning. He also separately explores Harris and Klebold's motivations. They were very different people whose illnesses dovetailed and played off one another. At the same time Cullen doesn't make excuses for the killers or sympathize with them. One of the best aspects was his exploration of Fusilier's involvement with dissecting Harris and Klebold's crimes and characters. Fusilier was a career FBI agent who specialized in hostage negotiations. He also had a son who was a Columbine student at the time of the massacre. I can't pass judgment on the responding authorities but soon after the incident they went into `save your own patootie' mode and Cullen walks us through the why and how of that and how it impacted the victim's families, the wider Columbine community and the nation. Best of all Cullen's focus stays on the dead and injured kids and their families as they continue to grieve and heal. This is a respectful and informative account of a horrific tragedy.
