Book Review: Blokh's classic puzzles

A good puzzle book is hard to find. For mid-to-strong players, practice tactical exercises are a must. The best puzzle books have (1)a variety of material, from simple warm up tactics to more complex positions suitable for 15 to 20 minute timed exercises, (2)clear diagrams, (3)sturdy bindings to hold up to alot of wear, and (4) at-a-glance solutions.
Blokh's book meets all these criteria. The fact that both White and Black solutions are ingeniously combined in many of the puzzles is fascinating, and more than doubles the value of the puzzle -- practice calculating a winning solution when your opponent can him or herself kill you on the next move! That's real chess.
Blokh's other, legendary, works -- his older, classic, set of puzzles, and the very popular CD/computer version of this product are unfamiliar to me. But this is a wonderful set of exercises, well presented. It is among the best puzzle books I have ever had.
