Book Review: A Big Story Competently Told

Any dedicated comic book fan could assemble a list of things that need to be included in a history of the comic book, and Wright surely hits almost every one in this comprehensive volume. What surprised me was how much more could have been included-- it'd be fun to speak with Wright about what he had to forego to create a tome, including everything, that didn't weigh six pounds. I agree with other reviewers that the ending is a bit rushed, but I'd argue that the recent history of the medium is far less interesting than its beginnings and development in the 40s through the 70s. Yes, the independent era is given short shrift, but overall the book is a valuable and thorough and scholarly work that demands respect and that I found fun to read.
For me, the best part of the book is saved for last. In an epilogue, Wright shares the insight that the reason comics have lost their clout and popularity is that all of society has become infantilized-- that film and TV have drifted down the intellectual scale to the place comics used to occupy. Truer words were never spoken.
