Book Review: chester goulds classic strip gets the treatment it deserves

At last chester gould"s seminal work is being given the treatment it so richly deserves.i first came across dick tracy reprints in my local comic shop about 20 years ago,and i was immediatly struck by how different it was to the other comics i usually bought from dc and marvel like jla green lantern xmen spiderman captain america etc.dick tracy is of course gould"s reaction to the ganster violence of early thirties chicago.he was also way ahead of his time in having tracy use forensic science and advanced gadgets like the 2 way wrist radio.the strip is most probably memorable for the villains who are very often grotesquely drawn.i am really looking forward to the intro of characters like,the insane selbert depool,pruneface the nazi spy,flattop jones,the blank etc.gould"s pen work is a joy for the comic fan ,the detail in each panel superb,the strip is really like the comic equivalant of a film noir with the violence being surprising for a thirties comic strip.this is to be a multi year project of i think 24 books,the books themselves are superb hardbacks in dustjackets and i think worth every penny.in fact that reminds me i"ll need to get another bookcase to put them in.
