Glad I picked this up used.
If you are looking for a fun, upbeat and nostalgic look back at the wonderful magazine you had to hide from your mom back in the 50's, 60's and 70's, this is not that book.
If you were hoping for an in-depth look at the inner-workings of the Mad artists and writers, and the business of running the magazine, forget it.
Interviews with the artists and staffers relating entertaining and informative atecdotes on what it was like to work for Mad in the golden years? Nope.
What you do get are some nice, thumbnail-size pictures of some of the covers, and a few panels from some of the EC comics, and, oh yeah, a bizarrely smug, humorless and unduly political text that almost beggars belief. It's a bad sign, when you can tell who the author voted-for within 2 pages of a book about Mad magazine. Lots of inane drivel about their pioneering social consciousness, how badly they were persectuted by intolerant, conservative meanies.. and this is in every, single chapter.
Now since there are folks that apparently can't get enough of this kind of thing, they can take this as a hearty recommendation. However, if the story of Mad magazine is your primary interest, I would suggest looking elsewhere.
