Book Review: Perhaps the most important book of its kind this year

John Dean's book is remarkable primarily because the author himself classifies himself as a conservative, and in this he differs from authors such as Michael Moore who are unapologetic liberals and can almost be heard smacking their lips as they savage (not without reason) those on the right and particularly the hard right. What is more, this book manages to combine a scholarly approach to research with an accessible style of writing -- Mr Dean has studied his subject very carefully, and the result is a devastating indictment of the Republican Party, which has been hijacked by the "religious" right (if bigotry is "religious", then I somehow misread my Bible).
My only quibble with the book is that despite fulsome thanks to a variety of editors in the acknowledgements section of the book, Mr Dean has released a tome with grammatical and language errors aplenty -- "vice verse" in place of "vice versa", "a one party rule" as opposed to "one party rule", a sentence which suggests that one of the leading lights of the "religious" right actually opposes school prayer, and what appears to be a fairly haphazard approach to the use of commas. The deterioration in the quality of the English language in the United States should be a much greater worry than it is. That said, however, this is a very, very important book, one that should be read across the political spectrum in the USA and beyond.
