Book Reviews of Constructing the Little House: Gender, Culture, and Laura Ingalls Wilder

Book Review: Very interesting, but too much feminist psycho-babble
Summary: 3 Stars

As a Little House fan for the past 23 years, I could not wait to get my hands on this book. Ann Romines clearly explains the complex, difficult relationship (both privately and professionally) between an aging, small town Laura and her famous, cosmopolitan daughter Rose as they co-wrote the Little House series. She also points out aspects of gender and class in the series that I had previously overlooked. My only bone to pick is that Ms. Romines seems to lean heavily on the current academic "women's studies" line of woman as victim of patriarchy and outdated Freudian concepts of feminine and masculine. When Ms. Romines discusses such topics as the Oedipal undercurrents of Farmer Boy, or the "intensely romantic", "potentially incestuous" relationship even the very young Laura shares with her Pa, I had to roll my eyes. It comes across as feminist overkill. All in all, this book is excellent in the sense that it helps one to understand the reasons Laura Ingalls Wilder put her life to paper and how her reminiscing was driven by the market and publishers' demands for more interesting, plot driven stories. It lays to rest the juvenile expectations that her series was written, as biographer Zochert says, as a sweet way to remember her family, penning the tales on lined paper with a pencil in her farmhouse in Missouri. It also dispels, once and for all, that the books are not fiction. They certainly are, albeit with true to life names and places for the most part. This is a book for someone who is not afraid to look at the Little House series and Laura Ingalls Wilder without rose colored glasses.
