Book Reviews of CrankBook Review: Crank Me till I'm Gone Summary: 5 Stars
Crank Me till I'm Gone by Danny V., 9th Grade, Carson High School, Carson, CA
The title of my book is Crank, by Ellen Hopkins. The two different reasons why I chose to read Crank, were because my friend told me about it and it seemed interesting, and secondly, my cousin was reading it, and when he finished he said, "This is an interesting book," and I wanted to know why he thought so.
Crank is about a girl named Kristina who lives with her mother. Kristina's father is a drug user, and loves to eat fast food or "to go" food, like Kristina calls it in the book. He also has a girlfriend that he does crystal meth(Crank) with, even though he has just a little bit of money. One day, Kristina's father comes into her room where she is doing meth with one of her lovers and joins them in sniffing it. When she on Crank, Kristina wants to unleash her bad-girl alter-ego, Bree, so she regularly goes to her drug-dealer friend's house to ask if he can get her an eight ball. The appearance of Bree is important because she is the terrible part of Kristina's personality. A turning point in the book is when Kristina/Bree goes with another one of her many boyfriends to the woods and her life changes forever.
Crank is a unique book because it's written in short poems. Crank is a heavy and depressing book, and it is sending us a message to be careful of drugs, because they can affect anyone. Ellen Hopkins is an excellent writer and I wish I could write poetry like her. I love how she describes what Kristina/Bree is doing and what she feels, and details about her life. A passage that shows an example of this is on page 104:
"Dad Said
I shouldn't be tootin.' My boss
almost caught me last time.
Think I could convince her to try a line.
I'd love to get her in bed."
This quote made me see that her father doesn't care about her because he is using foul language right in front of his own daughter, which is not even as bad as what he normally does in front of her.
I think Ellen Hopkins wrote this book to help keep teens drug free by showing what Crank can do to them. She captures Kristina, aka Bree, as a girl addicted to crystal meth who doesn't think before she acts. I would love to buy and give this book away to people who are addicted to drugs so they can see what is happening to them. However, until then, I'll spread the word around to my friends to read this magnificent book.
This book made me realize that is wise to say no to drugs because you can get addicted to them, and it will be very hard to stop. I would recommend this book to anyone, male or female, teen or adult, so they can understand what drugs can do to them. On a scale one to ten, I rate this book a ten, because there are drugs out there that can kill or cause brain damage, and it is good to stay informed about them. The writing in this book was really amazing. All the things that Kristina went through were shocking and emotional, and taught me not to get involved with drugs, especially the most popular, yet dangerous one--Crank.
Book Review: Crank by Ellen Hopkins Summary: 5 Stars
This incredible story called CRANK by Ellen Hopkins starts out with a good, nice teenage girl,Kristina who alaways follows the rules. This all changes when she meets her father, a drug addict who couldn't care less about where she was when she cam to visit. This is when her aleter ego , Bree, comes out of her. Bree begins to take control and wants to do drugs, party, and have sex.
She meets a boy who shows her crank(metanphetamine) and everything it does. When she goes home her mother and step-fater know she has changed. She instills into the wrong crowd, craving more crank and forgets life without crank. She meets a nasty jock who wouldn't take no for a answer and leaves Krinstina regretting some of her former descisions. Later on, she meets Chase, whom she introduces her to ecstasy. Bree falls deeper into addiction, and can't go through life without snorting a line of crank every now and then.
This book was very exciting, and i recommend it to anyone who is interested in how peer pressure works, or thinks there is no such thing as peer pressure. This also show how drugs can turn someone into a complete stranger and how taking drugs can change not only you, but others around you too. Crank is a terrible drug and the poetic free form style of this book drove me into a place like i was in the clouds looking at what wasgoing on. personally I stayed up until 3 am to finish it in one night. I recomend this book to teenagers interested in drugs, becuase this may drive them away from it, and i also recommend this book for adults who read Go Ask Alice.
Book Review: Crank by Ellen Hopkins Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not sure what I thought Crank was going to be about, but it wasn't what I expected. The description on the back of the book isn't too detailed, and I guess you could say that I assumed what "monster" meant. I was wrong though. Crank is about Kristina battling her drug addition and the fight going on within herself.
Kristina was just like any other teenager: good grades, good kid, and followed the rules. Then one day, she just got mixed up with the wrong kind of people, which led to her trying and getting hooked on crystal meth. The more she used it, the more she wanted it.
I love the idea of this being written in verses because it seemed to add more emotion to the story. Not that there isn't already enough emotion going on when it comes to drugs, because there is. But not only does drugs effect the user, but it also effects the user's loved ones, just in a different kind of way. I haven't ever been involved in drugs but I know some people that have, and no one wants to sit back and watch someone they care about slip farther and farther from reality - relying solely on their next high to get them through the day.
Crank is a very raw, and terrifyingly real story. It shows what someone's life will become like when addicted to drugs. Crank is just an amazing and so full of truth read that I recommend this to both teenagers and adults. Also, there is a sequel, Glass, which I will definitely be reading. And a third book, Fallout, which is due to release in 2010.
Book Review: Crank by Ellen hopkins Summary: 5 Stars
This book took a hard look at a girls fight with crank ! And all the struggles and toll on family life! Very very well written book!
Book Review: Crank is AMAZING!!! Summary: 5 Stars
You always hear on Above the Influence commercials and other ads not to take drugs. But, it's different when you actually read and hear about somebody getting dangerously addicted to them. Crank is by Ellen Hopkins. I rated it five stars, because it was so well-written and I loved how it was in verses. Hopkins tells about Kristina Georgia Snow, a straight A student and how she met crank, the "monster". You may also know this monster by meth. When Kristina goes out to visit her dad, she meets Adam, who she falls in love with. Adam introduces her to meth. Kristina is immediately addicted. Crank makes her go where she never knew she could go. Kristina turns into Bree. Bree is the tough, exotic spontaneous part of Kristina. Throughout her adventure with the monster, a lot happens. And not all of them are good. Can Kristina save herself before it's too late? Crank is realistic fiction.
I loved this book, I couldn't put it down. It looks big but you will go through it fast because it's in verses. Hopkins tells this story based slightly on her daughter's experience with meth. I would definitely recommend this book for teenagers and older. It really gives you a good idea of how addicted people can get.
