Book Reviews of Crazy '08: How a Cast of Cranks, Rogues, Boneheads, and Magnates Created the Greatest Year in Baseball History

Book Review: "Play ball!"
Summary: 5 Stars

The author claims that 1908 was the greatest year in baseball history, and after reading the book it's difficult to disagree with her, although as a rabid Philllies fan I'm rather partial to the 1980 season, when my team won its only World Series (to date). This is an extremely well-written book, and it delves into the year 1908 in great detail, but it does also give some information about non-basebal events. Also, the mini-biographies of the prominent people of that era were quite welcome, and the Epilogue told us the future life of many of them after that season. In this day of extremely overpaid and pampered players, it's difficult to remember that once there was a reserve clause that bound players to a team, and they could be moved around or sold to another team at the mere whim of the owners. These owner don't come off very well in the book, and that's not surprising. The way the game was played all those many years ago is a fascinating scenario and alone is worth the price of the book. There are a few lapses in information in the book (the one which sticks in my mind is that the AL Philadelphia team is called the Phillies once). I rememer going to see a Phillies game at Shibe Park, which was by then called Connie Mack Stadium, and was happy to asee a picture of it in the book. I was also pleased, and surprised, to read about my hometown of Shamokin, the place where the Coveleski brothers were born and raised. Of course, the book is concened with Harry Coveleski, but his brother Stan is the one enshrined in the Hall of Fame. This is a book every true baseball fan should read!
