Michael Lee West starts this story out with a bang, literally! This story of three generations of women begins in a kitchen which seems, somehow, just perfect!! The fact that it starts out with a killing lets you know that this is not your typical multi-generational tale.This is an intricate tale told from the voices of the different women which gives an authenticity to the tale, even in it's outlandish moments.
These women don't just cross paths, they seem to collide and rebound with verve.
Miss Gussie is the matriarch of the family and has to come to terms with the fact that her two daughters, Dorothy and Clancy Jane could not be more different, in their needs, their desires and in the paths they choose. Dorothy chooses security, Clancy Jane chooses love. Both will be, not unexpectedly, disappointed.
As the sisters have daughters, the cycle seems to repeat itself in Violet and Bitsy. The wild choices and the safe choices seemingly being made again. The women cope with crushed expectations, abandonment, betrayal, maternal love and withdrawal, sibling rivalry at it's extreme and the amazing and piercing times, both happy and sad, that families generate on a constant basis.
The womens' voices ring with a genuine authenticity that is an enticing blend of humor, sorrow and compassion both for themselves and for each other.
