Book Reviews of Cross (Alex Cross)

Book Review: Campy Cross
Summary: 2 Stars

I am a fan of James Patterson. And I am particularly a fan of Alex Cross. I have read all of his Cross books and despite my disappointment in this book, from continuity issues to campy movie cross references. I reached a point at which I said enough already, give me the money shot and stop torturing me. This was the Alex Cross book for the initiated, we already know the history of the Dragon Slayer. So you can jump right into the water. Short chapters make it easy to turn pages. But, once you got your feet wet, you realize you should have rolled up your pant legs first. It was free money I am sure JP knew it. Probably ghost written. And still I will read Double Cross. Not out of any adolescent respect or honor. Mostly out of habbit. And like cigarettes, a habit I should probably break.

Book Review: Classic Alex Cross Good vs Evil Storytelling
Summary: 4 Stars

Alex Cross has faced his share of psycho killers and they have all taken their toll on him. Needing a change of pace, he leaves the FBI and starts his own private practice in DC. A series of vicious mob related murders that are connected to a serial rapist soon grab his attention. When Cross discovers the culprit may in fact be the man who murdered his wife, he knows that he can no longer sit by. Cross once again teams up with John Sampson to bring down a ruthless killer. This time it's personal.

James Patterson's Alex Cross Series is his most well known work and the best written. Cross certainly fits into the mold that Patterson set years ago when he embarked on this fast paced and engrossing series. Patterson's deep connection to his beloved character is revealed through the rich detail and emotion found in this novel. As fans would expect, this story is frenetically paced and impossible to put down from line one.

The Butcher might be Patterson's most evil character and the depths of his depravity have no bottom. We spend much of this book in the killer's head, and while this is a darkly disturbing journey, it is also an effective storytelling device that draws you right in. This is classic Alex Cross good vs. evil storytelling and fans of the series won't be disappointed.

Book Review: Cotton Candy--tasty but nothing to get your teeth into
Summary: 4 Stars

James Patterson and Stuart Woods are the two detective novelists writing right now who, as far as I'm concerned anyway, produce shallow, meaningless, and very readable books that are fun to consume, but which you'll have a hard time remembering three months later. Patterson has been writing this series for about 20 years now. The main character is one of those larger-than-life people who usually only exist in books, a college basketball star who majored in psychology and then joined the police department because he wanted to help the community. We've known since the series started that his wife was murdered senselessly years before the series started. He has periodic girlfriends, but they're usually written out of the plot somehow eventually.

In this story he's finally left the police, left the FBI, and started his own private practice as a psychologist. Pretty much the first thing that happens once he does this is his old partner on the DC police force, John Sampson, consults him on a serial rape case. After the two investigate a bit, they get the idea that the rapes might be related, somehow, to a series of assassinations performed by a legendary Mafia hit man known as "the Butcher". This of course leads Cross to the possibility that somehow all of this is related to the killing of his wife.

While this isn't the best detective novel in the history of fiction, it's a good book and the plot is satisfying. The ending is particularly amusing, and I enjoyed it a great deal. Recommended.

Book Review: Cross
Summary: 4 Stars

A tipical James Patterson. Fast, light and entertaining. But don't expect much of criminal procedure's case. It's as superficial as fast.

Book Review: Enjoyed this latest Cross update
Summary: 5 Stars

The story has its usual twists and turns, especially at the end, and kept me turning the pages to see how it would all play out. What a surprise at the end. Lots of foreshadowing though from the Butcher, but I didn't see where the answer would come from. Neat little twist.
