Book Reviews of Cross (Alex Cross)Book Review: Good, But Lacking Summary: 4 Stars
While the latest installment of Alex Cross was good, it was lacking something. That something was the ending, which was a total letdown after all the suspense built up through the book.
James Patterson could've done so much with this concept, and while it was a page-turner, I feel like he really dropped the ball in wrapping it up.
Book Review: Great Summary: 5 Stars
Great action filled book. Hard to put down once you start. Would love to see a movie made off of it.
Book Review: I thought this book would be worth reading... Mistake! Summary: 1 Stars
This may be the 'shark jumping' moment for Patterson and the Alex Cross series.
'Cross' is a disjointed mess, with cliched antagonists (Irish vs. Italian mobsters), and slower than usual pacing for a Patterson novel.
The plot never really gets off the ground,or engages the reader. I felt as if I'd read it all before. There's no real payoff for the story's 'hook'(Who killed Cross's wife?). Even the numerous interludes with Cross's Nana and kids aren't enough to sustain the action during the slow points. Other reviewers have already commented on the worst aspects of the story. I won't beat a dead horse.
All that's left is a book that Patterson must have sleepwalked through, and a teaser that only makes me realize what a waste of time it was to read this book.
I'm tempted to 'Cross' this series off my list. I have to wonder if the 4 and 5 star reviewers read the same book I did.
Book Review: James Patterson (Alex Cross series) Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered a total of 11 James Patterson books in the Alex Cross series from different places. I had all of them within 10 days and was surprised that I had a couple of them in 3 days. I love these books and I now have all but the latest one, when I get close to finishing these books I will order the last one.
Great shipper & great price!
Book Review: Mediocre Cross Novel Summary: 3 Stars
This book is a step back in the series. New life seemed to be given to the Alex Cross novels with the superb Mary, Mary. However, Cross was mediocre at best.
The premise was interesting. Alex goes after the killer of the rather frozen case of his wife's unsolved murder. However, the execution is just poor. The writing just really isn't up to par. Patterson doesn't even bother with subtlety here, with the very cheesy prologue. You'll lose count at how many times Alex mentions how "happy" he is, or how many times Maria tells Alex she loves him. These points apparently needed to to be hammered home ad nauseum by Patterson, which is the sure sign of a mediocre writer. Patterson, IMO, can be a great writer, but the volume of novels that he puts out can diminish the quality of his work.
The main nemesis isn't all that shocking or scary, and the chase really isn't full of as many surprises as past Cross novels.
I've read every book in the series other than Double Cross, and I'd put this novel square in the middle. I'm hoping for better from the next read.
