Book Review: "Look at what you brought on yourself and your family. You did this to them."

The phrase in the title, uttered by a vicious killer known as Tiger, applied to a woman that crossed some powerful people and paid dearly for it. However, it can also apply to what James Patterson is doing with his reputation and his "family" of readers. In the last few years, it has been clear that the works in "collaboration" are of uneven quality, and the last refuge was the Alex Cross series. Constant readers like myself knew that whenever the next novel in this series was out, we would have a great time, and therefore we were more willing to forgive the missteps with other series.
With this last book Patterson has shattered his last sanctuary. The only redeeming aspect of this novel is that it is fast paced, and if the main character was not Alex Cross, but instead some random guy, clueless regarding investigative procedures and dangerous situations, I would say there are some entertaining aspects. But this is not the case, we are talking about Alex Cross. And I bet most fans of the series will not swallow the way in which he acts in this installment. It feels like he is a puppet who others manipulate and beat up as much as they want. He is clueless as to what is going on and most of his decisions are wrong.
To make matters even worse, the last book in the series ended up with the "promise" of more to come in connection with Cross' nemesis, Kyle Craig. The fact that he is not part of this story, except for a very brief passage, which no doubt is geared to have fans waiting for the next book, is utterly disappointing.
Patterson has really missed the mark here. I am not sure if he was lured to changing the mood of the series completely by successful stories focused on Africa in the last few years, or if he just wants to see how far he can go in annoying his readers without them stopping to buy his books. The bottom line is that I hope someone talks some sense into him and he goes back to doing what made him one of the most successful authors alive.
