Book Reviews of Cruel and Unusual: Bush/Cheney's New World Order

Book Review: Similar to the Joe McCarthy-era
Summary: 5 Stars

Like Joe McCarthy in the 1950s the Bush administration exploits the common fear of hostile attacks for the development of their own power empire. Mark Crispin Miller, professor of media studies in New York, does not only deal with the clumsy campaign talk of the president, but also with the media induced distortion of reality, which is filling with consternation. The best known example is the ignoring of the UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter, who had pointed out again and again, that nothing had been discovered of that mentioned mass destruction weapons. A scientist (in a similar position like Ritter in the United Kingdom) committed suicide due to the pressure under which Tony Blair put him. Scott Ritter did not kill himself, but nevertheless it is annoying, that the media attach more importance to the affected statements of a president in pilot jacket on an aircraft carrier with actor grins - than on the analyses of sober, renowned experts. In addition Mark Crispin Miller supplies facts with his book to the fundamental Christian background into which Bush is tangled, as well as to the Republican opinion war, which has broken out against democratic politics positions. Currently this still can be proved at the campaigns for the destabilization of Bill and Hillary Clinton and is going back far to the conservative fight against the counter-culture era of 68s time. The conservative parliamentary group has never forgiven, that government decisions (Vietnam war, Pershing rocket stationing) were criticized by parts of the population. The revenge at a liberal intellect lasts for a long time - the same process can be observed in Europe: In Germany the right-wings have just pushed the generation of 68s out of the political business - chancellor Gerhard Schr?der and foreign minister Joschka Fischer. Perhaps a change of direction takes place in the USA with Hillary Clinton in 2008 again - but not, however, if more and more uncritical acceptance is given to a team like this one of George W. Bush. Press must do more but only to pass on scornful talk of the instruction room of the White House, almost without comment. Press must realize more courage of check, analysis and sharp judgement. Perhaps not in the style of Mark Crispin Miller, who is writing too enraged. Once the ancient Roman TACITUS noticed: Write "sine ira et studio" - without anger and doggedness. Perhaps all of us still are involved too much, swimming in the daily whirlpool of politics, too much to be able to make balanced verdicts. After all, the book of Mark Crispin Miller is a valuable constituent on the way to the right one sorting of what Republican politics at present is risking ...
