Book Reviews of Cry to HeavenBook Review: An excellent book Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent book, captivating and interesting. Perhaps the finest compliment I can offer is that throughout the book I was never certain whether the leading characters would actually make it to the end. Their peril seems almost palpable, as do the other emotions evoked within its text.
Book Review: Anne Rice's stand-alone masterpiece! Summary: 5 Stars
Let me add my enthusiastic "bravo!" to the list. Read this book! This novel is a wonderful tale of music and the passion of lives fully lived...and the pain to which that fullness is wed. What thrilling, erotic read. This is the story of an 18th century castrato who is torn between getting revenge against those who mutilated him...or rising above that-- with his angelic voice and impossible good looks-- to become Italy's next opera star. Rice steeped her novel in betrayal, obsession, the drive for revenge, the lust for power, and the need of a astarved soul to find love. But beyond all these "bodice-ripper" adjectives, Cry to Heaven is at its heart an unflinching character study of a man who has his manhood stolen from him, and of how his mind has to twist in on itself to cope with this loss. Ms. Rice's protagonist, Tonio Treschi is wonderfully nuanced, and we get to see into his tortured soul at every step of his journey-- from the confused and unfocused pain of being castrated, to the cold, focused revenge on the one responsible. Masterful! Add to this the lush backdrop of the intrigue of the opera scene in Naples, Venice, Milan and Rome...well, this is truly a feast. And I ate every morsel. After reading this novel, you'll felt like you've earned a PhD in musicology, opera seria, and Italian political history-- it's that detailed. But the details NEVER bog down the story, just make it richer and richer. Again, bravo, bravo Anne Rice!

Book Review: Beautiful, Saddening, yet joyful in its own. Summary: 5 Stars
In this atypical book by Ms. rice, she tells the tale of two half men. Half because they do not have what is necessary to procreate, yet more human in their suffering adn self-torment. Guido, sold into the wold of the castrati opera singers, has a voice that would make the angels cry. fallen at the age of 18 by the tragic loos of his voice, he finds himself searching for another to sing for him. In this he finds Tonio, a boy forced into the world of the castrati by treachery and jealousy. One can easily lose themselves in the story that will make you laugh, cry, and make you sing the praises for this very excellent book.
Book Review: By far my favorite Anne Rice book Summary: 5 Stars
This is an amazing decadent read. I just wanted the story to go and on. It has broken my heart to learn that my most favorite author has given up writing such incredible books.
Feb 2010
Still my favorite Rice book ( and that's saying something considering she's written so may amazing ones). I've even read "Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt", and altough not my usual choice for reading, found it to be a wonderful book. Thank you Anne. I look forward to many more years of reading your books.
