Book Review: HOW DID HE DO IT?....HOW DID HE PULL IT OFF?

Wow! what an achievment...a beautiful book of real depth in explaining why cuban music sounds the way it does, but at the same time readable by anyone with even just a passing interest. I particularly liked the way he breaks down the different( and central)influences from the different parts of Africa, with their respective religions and cultures, and what were the global forces and events that dictated how and when these different african groups came to Cuba, into the human cauldron that produced cuban music and culture...This, I suspect, has never been done by an english-speaking writer before, at least not one who understands the music first hand (who has dug it,played it,and mingled with it for many years), and yet at the same time can approach the subject with a keen, rigourous academic/historical/musicological eye as well...which, let's face it, you need if you are going to try to write about such a deep and many-splendoured subject as this.A staggering amount of research has gone into this work,and you know what?.. I bet he enjoyed every minute of it!! ACHE, bruv!
