Book Review: 4 1/2 stars, decent plot could be better

This book can be read standalone but reading the series will help with the characters.
Some humor as in the wild west themes and portals at the casino. Not too many bloopers so that doesn't detract. A number of plots some of which are unresolved Including the sleazy head of the white circle. In spite of a lot of action there is some good character development. Some plot surprises as when Cassie complains to the previous Pyhthia she didn't get trained and the previous Pythia hands her what turns out o be the key to handling her powers.
This book with all the zipping around in Lay Lines and vortex could make a great FX heavy movie of the sort that are so popular today. IMHO that gets to be a little over done but not badly so.
Overall and excellent read just not quite a home run.
