Book Review: Arthurian legend, but scantily done
Summary: 3 Stars
As a lover of both literature for young adults, and of Arthurian legend, I thought I would love DAMOSEL. However, I have to say that I was quite disappointed.
DAMOSEL follows the story of Damosel, a Lady of the Lake, and Twixt, a dwarf who has to cope with the hostility that his difference brings out in others. From these two perspectives, and as their two separate stories intertwine, the reader is able to learn about Arthur and his famous court in Camelot from a different viewpoint. Magic is firmly at the centre of this book, as Damosel details her life in the Lake and how she made use of magic to help protect Arthur from his many enemies.
But, I feel that DAMOSEL is let down by its size. Arhturian legend is usually so deep with emotion, magic, myth and a graual deepening of suspense, yet DAMOSEL comes in just under 200 pages long. Because of this, the story felt too sparse - progressions in the storyline seemed to happen out of the blue, making a lot of the action feel forced and rushed. It is such a shame, because Spinner really did have a great concept with DAMOSEL.
