The Liu piece is also great and you should know that it is actually the #4 story in the Dirk and Steele series.

I purchased this for the Marjorie Liu story "A dream of Stone and Shadow. It is an excellent story of a woman who sees multiple futures, not hers though, and a hero who is in so much pain, yet will do what can only be considered extraordinary lengths, to protect those he has promised to care for, as does our heroine.
The child that brings these two completely different people together's plight is quite painful and one not often discussed in a romance novel, but it was not gratutitous, but powerful.
To NOT read this book, and trash it like some of the other reviews said is sad. Those who might miss such a great story based on those other reviews are really missing one of the best short stories I've read this year.
update: I finally got around to reading the Christine Feehan story, and all I can say is wow, as someone who had not read any of the books in this series before, and after reading all negative reviews I was more than a bit surprised at how wonderful it was I could not put it down, finished it in 2 days. I am sorry it took me so long to read it but, am very thankful I have.

Book Review: DON'T BUY! Unfortunate for LIU though.

This is a HUGE RIPOFF by CHRISTINE FEEHAN, & she's lost her place on my "Must Buy" shelf and should be ashamed of herself!!! Feehan takes advantage of LIU's fame & marketability to REPRINT from 2001 & RESELL an already published novel! I'm ashamed to have once been a fan of an author who would intentionally rip off buyers, fans, readers, and STEAL hard-earned & well-deserved income & accolades from LIU's excellent story. Why Oh WHY didn't Liu publish this on her own??? Now the reviews will tarnish her name, when it's Feehan who deserves the ZERO rating. I felt forced to give this 3-stars so that LIU would get some credit--though believe me, LIU carries this entire book! I regret not following my own rule of previewing through Library first, but I USED TO trust Feehan enough to buy on sight. Never again.
Liu, you DON'T need Feehan or anyone else, to sell your books & succeed! Don't let the old guard cover you in their scat, nor bury you in their slimy misdeeds as Feehan has. Every book by Liu stands on its OWN excellence, and is worth every dime--but not this one at $7.99 for one short original story; and worse, Feehan probably took the lion's share of the profit, just as she did the author name-space for this title.
Liu's story is 159 pages--with a TINY bit of fleshing out, it could easily have been a novel rather than a "short-story". I applaud Liu for her magical imagination, making the impossible seem too real--not to mention my new addiction to ANY thing "Dirk & Steele" related [more please!] by Liu.
I suggest a library loan for this book--save your money for a new Liu title instead.

I am a fan of Christine Feehan but had not read anything by Liu. This was a good read to get me excited about reading her work. I am now on my third book by her.
