Book Reviews of Dark Hollow

Book Review: A great read!
Summary: 5 Stars

In a time when Bentley Little must live in a gated community and is now on the "lame" side...and Koontz went formula and soft years ago...with all peachy-keen happy endings gauranteed...this book is what horror should be. (Those two need to get out of the house and get sacred again.) You won't go wrong here...although as a dog lover it's a pretty intense story. It is the first of 4 of his books I've read now and so far my favorite. What a movie it'd make...but the subject matter won't let that happen...lol!
Kudos to you Keene.

Book Review: A solid good read, and a solid 4 star
Summary: 4 Stars

A solid good read that I thought was good all around and left me satified.
what's more to say than that?
and I felt it was money well spent

Book Review: An intense tale of horror
Summary: 5 Stars

As others have already noted here, any fan of contemporary horror fiction needs to put this one on their reading list for '08. Keene's ability to create nuanced, utterly believable characters and place than in surreal, deeply frightening situations has never been so powerfully employed. The atmosphere in these pages is so thick you can almost feel yourself getting sucked in as the story moves along. Highly recommended, and I'd urge anyone who enjoys Keene's work to also check out Crimson Orgy by Austin Williams, another superb new horror thriller that kept me up late at night.

Book Review: Another Keene Classic!
Summary: 4 Stars

I found this book on par with Keen's other works. I just had a few things about it that kept me from giving it five stars.

- Maybe it's just me, but sometimes I got the impression that Keene's cast of characters resembled those from the TV show "King of the Hill." I'm not saying that they were kind of similar in their quirkiness and humor. This isn't necessarilly a bad thing, but I found it a little distracting at times.

- I persoanlly found the "pan monster" somewhat of a letdown. I think Keene did a wonderful job with it, but I guess I like my monsters a little more "monstery."

- The detective got on my nerves a little. I mean they're chasing a killer goat man through the burning woods while getting attacked by evil trees and he's worried about a crime scene?

These points are personal and probably seem very trivial to most people. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Keene's stuff and would never let such knit-picky stuff prevent me from reading more of his stuff.

Keen's a great writer and definitely a breath of fresh air in a genre filled with so much crappy work. I would have preferred to be able to give this four and a half stars, but I didn't have that options.

Thanks, Brian! Looking forward to the next book!

Book Review: Another Keene thriller!!
Summary: 5 Stars

From the very first line in the book i was hooked, Dark hollow is a Keene classic that contains gruesome and graphic horror scenes and has a few really good Knee slappers.

Adam Senft, a stay at home witter, was taking his morning walk with his beloved companion, Big Steve. Wondering into the Forrest, they stumble upon a female neighbor doing something a little kinky with what turns out to be a Satyr, which in mythology is a being that is half man, half goat. Adam of course doesn't realize that this is a supernatural being and tries not to think about it. But soon enough women in his neighborhood begin to disappear. The Satyr has a pipe that he plays, it seduces women into a hypnotic state, so it can to unspeakable thing with them. Even Adams own wife cannot resist the call of the Satyr.

To defeat the beast Adam and a group of male neighbors must go to a house in the Forrest, the scene of a 20 year old murder. Where they find the answer locked in a trunk of Nelson LeHorns attic.

The closing of the book is phenomenal and a little sad. But far from disappointing. On a shiver scale of 1-10, i award Dark Hollow 10 sculls.
