Book Reviews of Dark HollowBook Review: Thoroughly enjoyable modern horror Summary: 4 StarsNot just a good, original story, but the characters were beautifully described. I felt like I knew these men by the end of this book. I could feel the main characters pain, and this may seem strange to some of you, but I desire that in a story. If you dont care about the characters you just dont care about the story. I would describe this book as Stephen King, if he had bigger balls. I would gaurantee that any fan of the horror genre would greatly enjoy this book. I cant wait to see what he comes up with next. He truly is a demented yet extremely talented genius. Hope this review helps your decision.
Book Review: Faun all over this! Summary: 4 StarsI am a huge fan of Brian Keene's zombie books, he isn't afraid to get all disgusting and politically incorrect and that's refreshing. Naturally I picked up Dark Hollow to read as soon as I saw the author's name. I loved it, up until a certain point, and I have realized that with Keene's books, this happens a lot, as if he just runs out of steam at the end.
Don't get me wrong, it's an amazing horror novel with Keene's visceral signature all over it. He can write strong erotic overtones, right next to decisively stomach churning heave worthy descriptions, and the next second carry you off into oblivion. I love that he laid down the zombies, and Ob for a change, and introduced us to a new character that will make you think twice the next time you read Greek mythology, or see a statue in the woods.
My only problem is the ending, and it could just be me, but I felt like it didn't have the same brilliance as the other 3/4ths of the book. That said, I would still recommend anyone who loves horror, and needs a refresher on how it should be done.
Book Review: Good Old Fashioned Horror Summary: 4 StarsKeene is an exceptional writer! I look forward to each new work and DARK HOLLOW was no exception. Here Keene offers up a scare-fest others just aren't producing these days. Centered around a group of male, middle-aged neighbors and friends, Keene introduces the Big Bad early and keeps the tension high and the pages turning as wives and girlfriend's begin to disappear. The guys grab their guns, their town's history, and a couple cases of beer and set out to bring down the oogie boogie with the cloven hooves. Several very scary set pieces show off Keene's talent quite nicely. With all of that said, I just can't bring myself to grant 5-stars. Why? I just found the Big Bad and all of the sex a bit silly for me. Can't wait for the next one, Brian. You are a MUST-READ for me.
Book Review: Another Keene thriller!! Summary: 5 StarsFrom the very first line in the book i was hooked, Dark hollow is a Keene classic that contains gruesome and graphic horror scenes and has a few really good Knee slappers.
Adam Senft, a stay at home witter, was taking his morning walk with his beloved companion, Big Steve. Wondering into the Forrest, they stumble upon a female neighbor doing something a little kinky with what turns out to be a Satyr, which in mythology is a being that is half man, half goat. Adam of course doesn't realize that this is a supernatural being and tries not to think about it. But soon enough women in his neighborhood begin to disappear. The Satyr has a pipe that he plays, it seduces women into a hypnotic state, so it can to unspeakable thing with them. Even Adams own wife cannot resist the call of the Satyr.
To defeat the beast Adam and a group of male neighbors must go to a house in the Forrest, the scene of a 20 year old murder. Where they find the answer locked in a trunk of Nelson LeHorns attic.
The closing of the book is phenomenal and a little sad. But far from disappointing. On a shiver scale of 1-10, i award Dark Hollow 10 sculls.
Book Review: Keene does it again Summary: 5 StarsBrain Keene is well known for his zombie books such as the rising, the dead sea and city of the dead. This was my first Keene book that was not about zombies. The book starts off quickly and follows Adam who is a writer. Adam discovers a Saytr in the woods in an compromising situation. Adam convinces himself he was seeing a man in a costume. But as the story unfolds Adam realizes that it is an actual satyr. When local women begin disappearing and Adam and decides to tell his neighbors about the satyr. Then the satyr decides to come after Adam's wife and his friends wife, Adam and his friends are forced to find the satyr and try to kill it. This book is fast paced and a good read. The things this satyr did had me freaked out. If your looking for a good scare this book is good pick.
