Book Review: forbidden passion

Third in the twelve houses series of novels from sharon shinn. These are set in a fantasy land called gillengaria, a typical feudal realm. certain people there have special powers ranging from healing to shapeshifting, and they are called mystics, and treated with fear and suspicion and hatred by lots of ordinary folk. the country is ruled by a king but storm clouds are gathering as various nobles appear to be plotting against him. the series follows the exploits of a group of mystics and soldiers who are seeking to head this off.
This third volume deals with one of them, a young soldier called justin who is sent to spy on a convent ruled by those who hate mystics. at the same time a young girl called ellynor has just become a novice there. fate brings the two of them together. and can love conquer all?
Not a book to come in on. start with the beginning of the series. but if you have, you'll find this is thankfully more of the same. sharon shinn is very good indeed at writing appealing characters and creating romances and she does the same here. the focus is primarily on justin but the other characters of the series do get a good look in also. and the ongoing plot of impending war does move slightly forward.
A typically entertaining piece of work from a very good writer
