Book Review: "...a meanness inside me...."
Summary: 5 Stars
"I have a meanness inside me, real as an organ." Thus begins another winner by Gillian Flynn, although not a good choice for the squeamish. She writes with brutal honesty and cutting sarcasm, not always pretty. On the first page alone....."Me going to school in my dead sisters' hand-me-downs: Shirts with mustardy armpits........and I always had bulging pockets under my eyes, drunk-landlady eyes." Exquisite! And this: "I was not a lovable child, and I'd grown into a deeply unlovable adult. Draw a picture of my soul, and it'd be a scribble with fangs." And this is just the first page! How can you not be drawn in? For those of you who never harbor ill-will or murderous venom, you will not relate.
Libby Day begins as a thoroughly unlikeable character, manipulative, self-pitying, quick to blame others for her present state of affairs. By the time we've finished her journey (read other reviews for the plot), she's figured out how to connect with other people again, although she never quite forgives herself for "trying to do the right thing and f***ing up completely."
Are there problems? A few--I wasn't crazy about the satanic angle here. But otherwise, a darn tootin' story, told well.
