Book Review: "I felt like a comet with a tail I didn't want."

Lindsay is a master of metaphor. Take the following example from towards the end of the book:
"...We had to go, go find him, go find him and stop him. But how did I do that with Laquerta along for the ride? I felt like a comet with a tail I didn't want. I took a deep breath."
With that kind of lingual finesse, who needs Hannibal?
I also found it annoying, really jarring, whenever Dexter would say something like, "I would've admired him...if I had emotions--which I don't." I know someone in my life who is like Dexter, somewhat schizoid. Someone like that doesn't constantly remind himself or everyone that he doesn't have feelings. In fact, there are some things Jeff Lindsay calls feelings and denies Dexter, which are not really feelings that Dexter would lack, such as humor, and even admiration. The main feeling Dexter lacks is empathy and connection with other humans.
If anything, Dexter would be more often exasperated or puzzled at the behavior of others...not continually reminding us that he has no emotions, like some self-important adolescent who takes pride in his stoicism.
