Book Reviews of Darkly Dreaming Dexter

Book Review: Tasteless, tacky, plotless and generally lifeless!
Summary: 1 Stars

A dissapointing book. It just sounded like it was going to be such a fantastic read and it was far from this. Would not recommend at all!

Book Review: A serial killer that I want to succeed
Summary: 5 Stars

I really enjoyed this book, Dexter is a strange character acting the part of a 'normal' human while killing 'deserving victims' when there is a full moon. There were places where it was a bit clunky, but you expect that with a first book. An original idea and a good story.

Book Review: Decidedly Dicey Debut Dexter
Summary: 3 Stars

When writing a novel from a first person point of view you have to make the character, whose mind the reader is stuck in, attractive. In the case of Dexter, this is the case. Dexter is a blood specialist working for the Miami police so part of his role is getting close to grisly crime scenes. However, it is not the job that defines Dexter but his hobby - murder. You see Dexter is a Serial Killer who only kills other Serial Killers. This is meant to make us believe he is not all bad as he only kill those that deserve it.

In the case of 'Darkly Dreaming Dexter' a killer is on the loose who likes to chop up women of the night and wrap them in perfect parcels for the police to find. Can Dexter find the killer and help his sister get a promotion and why does the killer seem to have a style close to Dexter's?

This book begins very strongly as the central concept is a good one. We are given enough information about Dexter for us to understand his motives but still allow plenty of room for him to develop. The book takes a serious nose dive around the last third as Dexter starts to get visions of the killings happen. This does not work for me as this is a piece of crime fiction and not sci-fi. Also the ending is overly rushed, undermining the good work Jeff Lindsay made in developing the supporting characters.

The promise for future books is good as the setting is ready for more adventures. If Lindsay could improve his story structure and make Dexter slightly more believable this series could run and run.

Book Review: So close...
Summary: 4 Stars

A great read with plenty of black humour throughout but it was badly let down by some dodgy plot devices and a rushed ending. Still, looking forward to reading the second in the series & seeing the TV series based on it when it hits DVD.

Book Review: Brilliant
Summary: 4 Stars

Its dark and disturbing but offers much more than other serial killer books as we understand the world through Dexter who we know straight away is a murderer but it is fascinating that his simple job covers this up. It is a brilliant read with many twists and turns and the follow up is equally as good.
