Book Reviews of Darkness Brings The Dawn: Erik's StoryBook Review: Don't Bother Summary: 1 StarsNow usually I can be forgiving of various plot descrepencies and even a few characters acting... well, out of character, but this was beyond tolerable. I managed to get through 5 chapters before I had to put it down. It is riddled with errors! In some instances the author seems to enjoy throwing commas into random places where they are completely unnecessary, while in others the sentences are so long and run-on that by the time you reach the end you forget what the point was. Obviously there was no editor in place, and if their was they should seriously consider a career change.
And I have yet to mention the so-called "plot". It is so beyond unbelievable that I was physical unable to finish. I have read poor Phantom stories before but I always force myself to finish, if for no other reason than to give the work a fair chance. In this instance I was unable to.
Uness you have a collection that is incomplete without every piece of Phantom work, do yourself a favor and pass on this.
Book Review: I would have given it 0 if I could Summary: 1 StarsBad, bad, bad, bad. First of all, for those who actually read the original book and not just saw the movie, or musical, there are so many errors to count. There was no burning of an opera house, he didn't walk through a mirror and he didn't live at the end. Oh, and the little thing about a full, black mask, not a half of one. And it was the Paris Opera House, not the l'Opera Populaire, or however she mutliated the French in this. And, he wasn't Scottish.
If you really want to read a good book, find Susan Kay's wonderful "Phantom". It gives you the life of Erik, and makes you like the charecter far more than this book does.
Book Review: bad. Summary: 1 StarsI got this book as a christmas present (for myself) and I finally got to it on my reading list, I was excited about starting it, but I quickly grew tired and annoyed of it, and I had to start forcing myself to finish it around chapter six or so.
the language they were speaking, did not make sense. I actually thought they were speaking English through the entire book until I reached chapter nine or so. I kid you not. when she first introduced "Jake" in the story the accent confused me. how could such be said in that accent when it is later revealed she only speaks French? also when she is abducted, her abducter speaks with a certain non French accent which leads me to believe he was really speaking English, how could she understand him? I can only think the other lady translated things to her just so I could get on with the story. also, the French phrases confused me even more when it was stated her and Erik were speaking French. why put in a French phrase when they are speaking only French? I just cannot fathom that. the French phrases are definitely what played the main part in what made me think they were speaking English.
moving on, I don't know why I kept reading. maybe it was the Erik hungry phan in me that made me keep going, I also think it was a bad idea to base it much on Gerard Butler's performance and the movie. I loved him in the movie, but I know there could have been more on his part. the movie didn't even bring out the entire personality that makes the phantom, himself. not to mention the numerous missing characters.
moving the heck on from that now, the exclamation points bothered me very much as well. not to even start on the numerous spelling and grammatical errors. this book makes me shudder not only as a phantom phan, but as a reader. it was insulting to my brain and eyes. and why did she give Erik black hair when in the movie it is clearly a dark brown wig, and when Christine takes the mask and everything off in the movie, it is I suppose a more sandy blonde color? (or perhaps even light brown.) though I can't help but admit I liked picturing Erik with black hair. but I cannot really overlook the mistake when I think it is so easy to remember at least his hair color from the movie. also, I liked the thought of Erik with someone else, rather than him forever chasing after Christine. (though she was certainly mentioned enough in this book through Erik's thoughts. he had no time to mourn his loss of her and everything he'd known before Jake was thrown into his life. not very good for someone who was just on the brink of madness.)
a couple more (rare) things I liked in the story, was the children. I liked that Erik took them in, and also that he and Monique had many of their own as well. I also liked the very last page of the book, not just because I was finally done with the damn thing, but I liked the last picture she created of his life. that's pretty much all I care to admit I liked in the book.
I suggest borrowing it from the library if they have it, if you feel you must read every piece of phantom phiction out there (like I do), that way you can be sure of if you are wasting your money or not.
Book Review: Why did she write this? Summary: 1 StarsThis is simply the worst Phantom fiction ever written. First, it is poorly written. It feels to me like a trashy romance novel...and it is based on the not so well done POTO movie. It is a waste of money, the plot is awful. And Erik's astounding brilliance disappears and he turns into an overdone and unbelievable Scottish man. As far as the author's choice of "Phantom's" to base her character on...Gerard Butler? Not so much, Gerard was a decent Phantom, but certainly not good enough to truly embody what Erik is all about and he certainly does not deserve a book dedicated to him and his half of a performance he gave in the movie. Don't waste your time with this book, folks...this has to be the worst Phantom Fiction, ever.
Book Review: Darkness brings the Dawn...Erik's Story Summary: 5 StarsI have read a lot of books in my time, but none as spellbinding as this one. It starts in 1871 when Erik escapes from his lair at the end of the movie, through the smashed mirror, from that time on it's one adventure after another. I will not tell you how the book ends as it is a surprise, but I will tell you that the ending is good. I have read this book twice now and found it was better the second time around. One point should be noted: You will need to see the movie before you read the book, as the book picks up where the movie leaves off, and mentions several points from the movie. The movie and the book is a must see and must read. If I could give this book 10 stars I would. It was that good.
