Book Review: "Oh no, not ANOTHER superweapon!"

Any story set in the "Star Wars" universe involving the construction of a superweapon (much less one as seen here, a modified version of the Death Star) is bound to raise skepticism. Even "Return of the Jedi" has not escaped criticism in some circles for the fabled appearance of a second Death Star it depicts. Nonetheless, with "Darksaber" Kevin J. Anderson has created a fast-paced and incredibly entertaining "Star Wars" novel that also offers intriguing insights into events of the past.
Durga the Hutt has stolen the plans for the original Death Star, planning to reconstruct the space station's devastating superlaser; he has even enlisted the assistance of Bevel Lemelisk, one of the Death Star's designers. If this weren't enough, Admiral Daala has returned from apparent death to launch a brutal attack on the New Republic. On a more personal level, Luke Skywalker struggles with his seemingly doomed romance with the tragic Callista.
Probably the foremost aspect of the novel worthy of praise is Anderson's unique ability to conduct elaborate action sequences in a concise, yet engaging and fast paced manner. Gore Vidal once said of Edgar Rice Burroughs that he had "a gift few writer of any kind possess: he can describe action vividly." For anyone writing in the film-inspired "Star Wars" universe, this gift of description in this area is paramount, and Anderson here demonstrates that he possesses it tenfold, while also leaving room for the warmth, humor and the involving (if simplistic) characterization fans love the franchise for.
Another interesting aspect of the novel is certainly the insights it gives us via flashbacks into the past of Bevel Lemelisk, and therefore his relationship with the Emperor and the initial inception and construction of the Death Star.
"Darksaber" comes highly recommended to any "Star Wars" fan; rarely has a novel set in George Lucas' world been so entertaining and immensely satisfying.
