Book Reviews of Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible: Master the Finesse Swing and Lower Your Score (Dave Pelz Scoring Game Series)

Book Review: It Works, and It's Fun
Summary: 5 Stars

THIS book is quite loaded with instructions/tips for all sorts of different short game situations, but at the same time it does not lose its coherence all the way through. It will help you understand how to look at the game and how to lower your score. Very well-written, indeed.
For me, this book was exceptionally helpful 'cause I had been rather a ball-striker-type of player in the past. (If you are, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!) I've taken finesse shots a lot more seriously after I got the book, and it gives me joy in an entirely different dimension. After some practicing with the book, you will start to notice that you are one-putting quite more often than before. And of course.. your score is dropping rapidly!

Book Review: Great Golf Book Though Not for Everyone...
Summary: 5 Stars

Dave Pelz's Short Game Bible can be intimidating at first glance. It's somewhat techinical with alot of pages. People who want to understand the science behing short game shots will really appreciate this book. In addition to thoroughly explaining the various shots, Pelz provides convincing data to support his short game concepts. To implement his 'system' you'll need a lot of time and access to good practice facilities (or at least an open field). Since implement Pelz's '3x4' system, I've significantly improved my shots from within 70 yards. It's amazing how many times I've heard people say 'Nice Shot!' after one of my distance wedge shoots. I've had a little more difficulty incorporating Pelz's chipping method...though I should note I haven't put as much time into it! Overall this is a great golf book for people with the time and effort to read through it and practice.

Book Review: Great for analytical minds
Summary: 4 Stars

This book is excellent for the more scientific-minded golfer. Dave Pelz is a true scientist and breaks down golf from an entirely different angle. His practice sessions are a little unreasonable for most people, though. Not too many people would have the time or resources to figure our exactly how far each short game shot travels, but the book is worth the price simply for the reviews of the fundamentals of the short game swing. Just by reading the book and changing the way I practiced, I have taken about 5 strokes off of my handicap!

Book Review: Second Quality Shipped
Summary: 1 Stars

The book I was shipped had pages 79 - 110 bound upside down and out of order. In other words, facing page 78 is page 110 upside down. Had this been disclosed I would not have ordered this book and will not place any future orders with this merchant.

Book Review: It reformed my short game
Summary: 5 Stars

As a 10.2 index, this program has turned around my outlook on the short game and golf in general. I am SOOOO much more consistent from within 100 yards, and even though my longer game suffered last year (due to some injury and lessons, reforming my swing a bit), the short game kept my handicap from ballooning.

All other things being equal, Pelz's simple approach to the short game will make you a better golfer. He backs up his recommendations for setup, and how to control your distances with stacks of statistical data, instead of feelings or conjecture.

Update (1/20/04): Due to a great short game in 2003, my handicap has dropped to a 7.1. Certainly no thanks to my driver, that's for sure. I bagged the driver for the month of August and actually dropped to a 6.0, because giving it another go and rising the extra shot. But the short game kept it down. Thanks Dave!

Update (11/15/05): Another great golf season with Pelz's approach helping my game. Got down to a 3.9 in the middle of the year, ended with a 6.3, completely due to short game improvement.
